If you're looking to take even more control of your watering schedule and ensure proper irrigation for your landscape – while using 30-45% less water, you've found the right provider. At Irrigation Tech, we provide gutter-mounted rain sensors that signal your system to turn on only when  your landscape really needs more water. We can also install soil moisture sensors, however we do not recommend them because there are better, lower cost, and more reliable solutions now available such as WiFi controllers connected to a weather station.

Rain Sensors

If your irrigation system was installed by Irrigation Tech, your gutter-mounted rain sensor is preventing irrigation after a rain event, however, the water in the gutter, does not necessarily reflect the amount of water in the soil and can result in over-watering. This is why soil moisture sensors were developed.

Soil Moisture Sensors

Soil moisture sensors, which work with drip irrigation and sprinkler systems, can be set to any desired moisture level, help prevent overwatering, and can result in water savings of 30-45%. Sensors are placed a few to several inches under the soil and located strategically around a property to work with the irrigation system’s controller zones.

Instead of relying only on a preset irrigation interval independent of weather and soil conditions, in-ground moisture sensors signal the controller to suspend or allow watering according to a very accurate reading (+3%) of the level of moisture in the soil at the sensor location. During the hottest part of the year, soil moisture will be depleted more rapidly, and the irrigation system will water more frequently. When air and soil temperatures cool, or if there is a big rainstorm, the system will suspend watering until the moisture level in the ground falls below the allowed threshold.

A drawback of soil moisture sensors is that they are susceptible to damage by landscaping activities, animals, and tree or shrub roots because they are buried underground.

If you choose to have soil moisture sensors installed, Irrigation Tech uses Baseline soil moisture sensors and displays, but does not guarantee their performance.

The WaterTec S100 can be set to maintain and monitor any desired moisture level. It also includes a Sensor Bypass mode allowing the controller to run as if the WaterTec S100 were not present. In this mode, the WaterTec S100 will continue to take moisture readings but will not suspend watering.
